On poetry
Possession has spurred me to start my poetic education. I borrowed the Oxford Book of English Verse yesterday. It was languishing on Level 8 of Fisher, in one of those aisles with broken lights, the date-stamp page blank.I'm digging Wordsworth at the moment. I like how he describes nature, physical things, and doesn't make endless references to Greek mythology - another one of those gaping holes in my education. And not too much of that sappy love stuff.
Here are the two I liked from the anthology: Tintern Abbey and the Westminster Bridge one. Shelley's Ode to the West Wind is fun to read aloud too. And though it sort of falls within the sappy love category, I like Robert Browning's Meeting at night.
I'm a bit afraid of going past say the 1700's, what with all those weirde spelinges and wurdes that aern't lyke anye Inglyshe I knowe. Haven't dared venture into the 20th century yet either because I have this weird prejudice that it'll be all nonsensical and like:
