Gallipoli

Don't get me wrong, I have a great respect for the people who died at Gallipoli, and in other wars, for the relative peace and freedom we now enjoy in Australia.

But people, there was no glory at Gallipoli. Of course, there was courage, sacrifice and personal heroism. But recall: it was futile, the product of what was, really, a stupid strategy. Death and dirt and blood. Enough already with the jingoism and war glorification. Why does a nation need a war to become one of the grownups anyway? Putting aside the matter of invading the Aborigines, it should be a source of pride to Australians that our nation was founded with a constitution, in peace.
