Idol

I know bloggers who write about reality TV have a niche somewhere between the traitors and adulterers on the Dante-ometer, but...

HOW GOOD WAS ANTHONY!

Ok, I'm breathing now. Here are my rankings for tonight:

1. Anthony: "The Prayer". Bloody. Great. Song. Choice. I just ripped the Boccelli version off my Celine Dion Christmas CD *ahem*. I still hate his stylized little vocal catches (you know, that sobbing thing that boy band singers do), but damn, he tore it up tonight. And he's humble and cute. And he sang OPERA in ITALIAN. Good to see him get some depth. And yes, stick to the dress-coat look and neutral tones, the pink/light coloured tees are not great for shaking off the plastic-fantastic look. Though great for becoming Queer Idol, I imagine (not that there's anything wrong with that). Back to the performance: emotionally, on par with Guy's "Climb every mountain" or whateverit'scalled Sound of Music performance last year.

2. Ricki-Lee: some Whitney song. I didn't like her since one her first interviews where she's like "Shopping is my life!.....oh, I like music too." Her hobby is spending money, people. But she's growing on me. Kickass voice, good song choices, good style. Bouncy. She definitely deserved a touchdown (agggh I can't believe Mark Holdenisms are becoming part of our culture).

3. Casey: "Special ones". I love this song and my old band did it, so I'm a little biased. Needed a bit more "fuck you", but she nailed it. The all-round accolades were a bit much, but she's definitely a talent to watch. And she's pretty too.

4. Courtney: some Beach Boys song. Wrong choice man. Great voice, but vastly underused. He should've gone for a U2 song, something uplifting, something that actually builds up. Didn't deserve the smack-down by Mark though ("ordinary, ordinary, ordinary"...dickhead) though the message was true enough: we want more!

5. Chanel: some KD Lang song. I like her style and I'd buy her CD, but what she does is too subtle for onstage performances. Not a fantastic voice but she uses it well, nice phrasing and quirks. Won't win the competition. Oh and she's getting less likeable every week. How fussy and petulant was she at the photo shoot? But damn she's cute.
Oh what was with Marcia? She loves everyone usually!

6. Hayley: "Release". Good thing she went before Casey. Nice try, got the notes, but she ain't got nothing on Katie Noonan. I love the "country" catch in her voice, she should do that more often. I love her personality, very open and likeable, but she won't win. Actually she tore the house down last week, so could be a dark horse.

7. Daniel: "Your song". Lovely song, but not sung by him. Far, far, far too opera and for a trained classical singer, his notes aren't as good as we'd expect. Don't see the sex-appeal at all: I mean you can see his brains through those flared nostrils! And Mark's right, his phrasing sucks.

8. Marty: "Broken Wings", or something like that. Boring. I like him and his look is unique, but really not cutting it in the top 8. Sorry dude, you're the weakest link.

Overall, a bit disappointing for an own-choice show. Only Anthony was a show-stopper. I can't wait for the Jazz/Swing show though, if they actually have it this year.
