9/9

First reaction: "Howard's going to win the election, dammit."

I've always had a rather blasé reaction to terrorist attacks. 9/11: "heh, what will those anti-globalization people think of next". Bali: "meh, not again". It takes awhile for the significance of it to sink in, usually - I'm ashamed to say - after seeing the images on TV. And even then, I have to imagine what "11 dead" or "80 dead" or "3000 dead" means in terms of people I know. For 9/11, I imagined my whole school dying, thrice over. It's a problem, though, because I can't imagine beyond a couple of thousand. The difference between 20 000 and 700 000 is purely intellectual. It's just too hard to think of those extra zeroes as someone's father, daughter, mother or friend.
