Woohoo!

Did I mention that I have an exchange student coming? Probably not, in my self-obsessed ramblings. She's the girl whose family took me in while I was in France in 2000, and will be staying three months.

Anyway, I wanted her to experience high school in Australia, so I wrote to my old French co-ordinator and Year 7&8 teacher Mme S about whether my alma mater could take her in for a couple of weeks while we're down in Melbourne for the semester holidays. She was fine with it, but told me to write to the principal for permission. The principal refused, giving some crap excuse like there were already too many exchange students & it was unofficial & there was no one to be her buddy. Which was bollocks because a) it's only for NINE school days ferchrissakes, b) I explicitly accepted liability for her & we went through a school exchange program originally and c) Mme S had said that finding a buddy would be ok. But I imagined myself powerless so I just fumed and cursed the principal and muttered about how they milk you dry and then expect you to donate money but once you stop paying fees they don't give a toss any more... you get the idea.

Then...a stroke of luck/brilliance. I remembered that Mme S had told me to keep her posted, so I wrote her a pathetic nudge-nudge begging letter. Well...she took the hint and took on The Powers That Be for me, and won! Nadia will be able to stay for a week, not two as requested, but still, that'll save me looking for a school up here which would be a major pain in the gluteus.

Here's a toast to Mme S & loyal teachers everywhere. Santé!
